Biography of Founder and Executive Director:

Dr. Sidney Coupet, D.O., M.P.H. is an Internal Medicine Physician and currently a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at the University of Michigan. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, a Masters in Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh and his medical degree at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. As a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar he is conducting innovative research on the impact of Global Health on America’s Healthcare Professionals. He will utilize his skills to impact healthcare both in the United States and Haiti.

In 2006, Dr. Coupet founded Doctors United for Haiti (DUFH), in order to develop, organize, coordinate, and thereby enhance healthcare systems and services in Haiti.

Dr. Coupet graduated from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine where he was the International Student Association President and help facilitated international rotations for students to all parts of the world. He continued his dedication to service throughout medical school with involvement in the United Way of Erie Pennsylvania, as well as frequent health mission trips to Haiti. With guidance from his former mentor, Dr. Reza Nassiri, Dr. Coupet published research on TB/HIV in Haiti. Subsequently, in 2004, he was awarded the Black Achievers Award in Medicine.

Dr. Coupet simultaneously pursued an MPH degree from University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health with a focus in Health Policy Management. While at University of Pittsburgh, he became the first DO to become an Albert Schweitzer fellow and was granted the opportunity to travel to Haiti and work for two months with the son of the Mellon family, and the current manager of Hopital Albert Schweizter, Dr. Ian Rawson.

After Medical School, Dr. Coupet was selected to participate in the Osteopathic Health Policy Internship (OHPI) program, a three month program sponsored by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) to introduce young doctors to the legislative processes by spending time with health care lobbyists and policy makers in Washington, DC.

He successfully completed the Training in Policy Studies (TIPS) program through the New York Institute of Technology and New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYIT/NYCOM) where he worked closely and was mentored by the first African American to lead a US medical school, Dr. Barbara Ross Lee.

Dr. Coupet was selected by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation as a clinical Scholar for 2011- 2013. Dr. Coupet is the first Osteopathic physician ever to be selected for this prestigious national fellowship.

Live healthy, think healthy and treat healthy are the guiding principles with which Dr. Coupet intends to achieve his lifelong goal of becoming an Osteopathic physician with a public health/ health policy/health service research background in order to better serve as a major component and contributor to Health care in Haiti, as well as around the world.
